Greetings from the Director!

by Paula Schutt

Summer is flying quickly by, packed with many fun activities and things to keep us all busy.  The staff has already been busy making plans for fall and many fun things are in the works.

One well known group from The Gathering Place has recently done some restructuring and plans to begin their fall season stronger than ever!

The Blue Notes, formed and created by our very own Helen Grandt, has decided to elect an advisory board to help in growing the group and taking a bold step into the future.

When their fall season begins, Helen will be directing and assisting with piano accompaniment.  Working along side of her will  be President Bob Rosenbaum, Vice President Fran Parker, Secretary Beverly Roehl and Treasurer Shirley Anderson.  The group also consists of various committees:  music, membership, publicity, costumes and props, transportation coordinator and nominating committee.

I would like to take a moment to recognize Helen because in creating and growing the Blue Notes, she has shown us all what following your dreams can do.

Helen took her passion for music and gathered together a group of people who travel to various locations and bring a lot of joy and happiness to others.  In the process, the group is building friendships and memories that add much joy to their own life.

Over the years, Helen, by having the courage to make her dream come true and share her love of music with others, has touched many lives in a very positive way.

As we go through life, I believe that finding that one thing you are passionate about and pursuing it is what will make the difference in just getting by, or truly living your life to the fullest!

Kitchen Korner

by Kari Bachinski

Let’s face it, we can all use a little spice in our life every now and then!  I’ve got just the thing to wet your whistle and tempt your taste buds.  It’s TARRAGON! Tarragon is an herb, commonly termed “dragon herb” (no, it doesn’t make fire shoot out of your mouth), referring to the shape of its root.  It is considered one of the four fine herbs of French cooking, used in making Béarnaise sauce.  The French variety of Tarragon is best used in the kitchen, however, is finicky to grow.  The Russian variety prefers poor soil and happily tolerates drought and neglect.  Interesting enough, it is used to flavor a popular carbonated soft drink in Russia, called Tarkhum (which is Russian for tarragon).  There is yet another variety which is actually a member of the marigold family and is used in flower gardens.  Tarragon is believed to have medicinal purposes.  Ancient Greeks used it as a remedy for toothache.  This herb contains an anesthetic chemical, called eugenol, which is used for temporary pain relief.  During medieval times, it was believed that an herb’s appearance determined its medicinal value.  Because of this belief, tarragon was used to cure snakebites (serpentine shaped roots).  Use this great tasting herb in chicken, fish and egg dishes, as well as on green beans and in bean soup.  Sprinkle tarragon in tuna fish and egg salad.  A delicious and easy meal is cooked chicken with sautéed yellow squash, zucchini and red peppers seasoned with tarragon.  This may become your new favorite seasoning!

Subs Needed Pleeeeze!

Lynn and Kari are in desperate need of substitue kitchen workers.  If you can lend a hand and help with the noon meals please let us know.  The hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  If there is a certain day that is better than others let them know.
